Bangkok — where it started

The brand was born
to keep the factory
line moving.

Born in Shimokitazawa, Tokyo in 1970. Raised in Bangkok, Thailand from 1972. Katsuji Sakai spent over 40 years in Bangkok, deep in the world of OEM apparel production.

"When there was downtime at the factory, I didn't want the workers sitting idle. That's how JAH GUIDE began."

In 1996, Sakai founded a 60-person sewing factory in Bangkok. In the gaps between orders, he started a brand — a laboratory for difficult stitching and new forms. When he opened at Bangkok's LUMPINEE Night Bazaar, the brand spread naturally, reaching Thai and international media, DJs, and stylists.

The archive era. Between 1998 and 2008 the label reached Thai television, magazines, DJs and stylists.

The brand went dormant as OEM work expanded. Answering calls from long-time customers, Sakai brought it back in May 2026 with the exhibition "DUB MEDITATION DUB" — and set up his own company in Tokyo, Rub a Dub Co., Ltd., to carry it forward.

On the name. "RUB A DUB", "JAH GUIDE" and "DUB" derive from reggae and DUB sound-system culture. They are used throughout this site as references to Jamaican music culture — not to anything else.

Street. Sound. Craft.

The name is a sound.

RUB A DUB is what Jamaica called the way a sound system plays: one riddim, versioned again and again, the engineer working the desk in front of the crowd. DUB is the record turned inside out — echo, space, the mix as the instrument.

That is the whole of it. The lines are named after music, and the clothes are made in a sewing factory. Nothing else is being referred to, here or anywhere on this site.
